Wow. Where to begin? Almost a year ago, I received an email from Allie explaining to me this incredibly thoughtful, detailed and romantic wedding he and his fiance Hadley were planning. His ideas involved a celebration weekend near Hadley’s family home in Northeast Harbor. They were pulling all sorts of elements into their wedding: art, color, tradition, sport, inside jokes and many non-traditional ideas in the hopes of creating something truly authentic and unique to what they love and value. It was an opportunity for Malia and I to fly to Maine and capture the love and connection of two people who really knew who they were, what they wanted and their hope was that we would document it all: the joy, laughter, tears and all the details that made this one weekend in Maine so special. Needless to say: we jumped at the chance to be there.

The wedding ceremony was held at St. Mary’s By-The-Sea in Northeast Harbor with a tented reception nearby at the Asticou Inn.

Clifton Dock is just down the street from Hadley’s family home… and the location where they were engaged.

Everything was different about this wedding: from the rings, to the flowers, to the “Wedding Olympiad”: their love and creativity touched it all.

Hadley is about as gorgeous and no-fuss as it comes. She literally spent less than a minute in front of a mirror the whole day.

Allie is a man after my own heart: he sees and appreciates the details in life.

Allie welling up as he reads a note from Hadley.

We encouraged Hadley and Allie to do what felt right on their wedding day. For Hadley, that included surprising us by just getting her dress completely on in thirty seconds without notice and for Allie that meant choosing a tie with the perfect color and design that really made the entire shoot a huge success! Well done!

Hadley’s dad sees her in her dress for the first time.

The little girl on the right should get an award for best reactions of the wedding. Stand by for more…

The little girl seems thrilled with herself while Hadley somehow invests only another 20 seconds in front of the mirror before dashing off to the ceremony!

As a former Maine Swineherder of the year, I must say Hadley defies all stereotypes!

Hadley being Hadley: super calm, funny and beautiful.

Here we go! Wedding ceremony time!

A really amazing detail here: this is Hadley’s first look at Allie as she approaches the church altar.

The kiss!

Married! Finally!

A really neat combination of shots here: I photographed the color image, while Malia captured this black and white from inside the church. All in real time, nothing staged… just a precious moment captured forever.

MARRIED!!

Hadley and Allie took five minutes to themselves before joining the rest of the wedding party.

All of these images were captured in a space that’s about as wide and as long as a bowling alley lane (with houses just through the trees). You would never know.

What an honor it was to capture these moments!

Happy to be married!

The entire wedding party.

This is what love looks like.

They asked “can we do a goofy one” and all I said was “sure.” I strongly suspect that this family has done this before. 100% commitment here!

Really wonderful toasts. Everyone loved them…

The toasts were perfect: short, insightful and funny.

Ok, maybe not everyone thought that all the toasts were short.

Allie’s dad’s toast. Not a dry eye in the house.

More crazy group photos.

First dances.

And then things really started to heat up on the dance floor.

The dance floor was on fire.

A thank you toast to everyone who came, and one more slow dance with Allie and Hadley.

So much going on here, so a brief synopsis: 1.) lady in royal blue: you won the entire night. You crushed it. Well done. 2.) We can neither confirm nor deny if a perfectly choreographed dance to the Backstreet Boys’ song “I Want It That Way” ever occurred on this night. 3.) Lots more career-ending photos are password protected in the main proofs gallery at boathousestudios.com.

Lighting the sparklers for the grand depart!

So much fun.

What an amazing night. No words could ever capture it all.

To the entire Planting and Powell families (and friends): THANK YOU for being so welcoming, so fun and so real with us. Malia and I had an amazing day with you, and it was a true joy to capture these moments for you all. To Hadley and Allie: congratulations! You guys are the real deal and it was an honor to get to know you better! We truly hope our paths cross again very soon and if you’re ever near Portland, Maine or San Francisco, please let us know! What an amazing weekend! #hadleyallie
